Drama and Theatre Studies Students do a lot of thinking & Writing! They analyse components of a play, evaluate and make judgments about performances; interpret and explain the meaning of stage designs; develop ideas for devising a monologue or ensemble; identify, recognise and describe the use of drama elements; clarify a concept or theatrical choice; outline and summarise concepts in research texts; justify evidence to support an interpretation and critically reflect on the effectiveness of completed work.
I’m sure you know what it’s like jumping from your creative work to the complex thinking you do, analysing productions, interpreting plays, and writing essays on the treatment and transformation of creating ensembles and solo performances.
For the last twenty years, I’ve been researching and practising how to improve my students’ thinking strategies as they switch between creative and analytic thinking. I also put my thinking strategies into practice in my research and writing as a theatre critic, historian, and dramaturg.
